Chemical Peel in Cleveland, Ohio
Chemical resurfacing is commonly known by the term chemical peel in Cleveland, Ohio. Chemical peels are chemical treatments to give an improved appearance to the face. Chemical peels at Cleveland Cosmetic Surgery are used in treating photoaging (due to damage from the sun), scarring, acne, wrinkles, discoloration (dyschromia) or precancerous lesions. Chemical peels promote the growth of new skin by producing controlled injury to the skin and thus give an improved appearance.
Drs. Diamantis and Goldschmidt use different chemicals which give different degrees of injury to the skin. Some commonly used chemicals are glycolic acid, trichloroacetic acid (TCA or Obagi Blue Peel™), salicylic acid, "Jessners" solution, and phenol. There are different layers of skin, outer layer or epidermis and inner layer or dermis. Based on the degree of injury, the peels can be of ollowing types:
- Superficial peels such as glycolic acid produce a superficial injury so only the epidermis is affected. These peels improve the conditions such as dyschromia and acne.
- Deeper peels such as phenol peels produce injury within the dermis so they give the most dramatic results. They can reverse wrinkles and moderate to severe photoaging. They also carry a higher risk of complications and require a longer period of recovery.
Chemical peels are very effective and have a proven safety record; if used by a specialist. Not everybody can get chemical peels. Following are some conditions, wherein chemical peel is not advisable:
- For people with general poor health, it is not advisable to get chemical peels.
- In people with active infections and people under some medications such as isotretinoin (Accutane) precludes the use of medium and deep chemical peels.
- People with certain skin diseases or with abnormal scarring or who had recent surgeries should not get a chemical peel.
How is a Chemical Peel Performed?
The procedure for getting a chemical peel in Cleveland, Ohio begins with cleansing of skin vigorously. The depth of the peel depends on the chemical used to get a chemical peel done. Different types of peels are discussed below:
- Very light peels such as with low potency glycolic acid or 10-20% TCA can only penetrate the dead skin cells on the epidermis, without producing an injury. As this acts on the superficial level of the skin, this level of peel is also called "exfoliation".
- Light peels such as with 25-35% TCA, or 70% glycolic acid produce an injury on the entire epidermis and thus stimulate new epidermis regeneration. This level of chemical peel produces a burning sensation due to injury to the epidermis. This level of peel is also called "lunchtime peel" as the recovery time is very fast. There is a marked improvement in the appearance of the phototaged skin and scarring is minimal.
- Medium depth peels injure the upper level of the dermis and this stimulates collagen formation which in turn results in "plumping up" the skin. In these peels 35% TCA in combination with another chemical such as glycolic acid, is used. It produces minimal discomfort. The most common complaint during the procedure is burning, which is controlled with topical anesthesia or cool compresses.
- Deep peels make use of the chemical phenol solution, to produce an injury to the mid dermis. Deep peels help to eliminate the deep scars and furrows, thus giving dramatic results. As this peel involves deeper injury, risk of having complications is more. Complications with deep peels include scarring, darkening, permanent changes in the texture and redness of the skin. Deep peel procedure is done under anesthesia while monitoring the vital signs throughout the procedure. Occlusive bandages are required for the recovery and the recovery time is more and may take up to a month under normal conditions.
